The Northern Colorado Concert Band is an adult community band with members from Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Windsor, Berthoud, and many more NoCo locations. Our focus is on teamwork, collaboration, growth, and most importantly, having fun!
The current rehearsal venue for the concert band is Severance High School. Members of the band pay tax-deductible dues to cover the costs of running our program, and we participate in a music sharing program with the University of Northern Colorado and occasionally purchase our own scores.
Our concerts have been given at the Lincoln center in Fort Collins, Foundation Hall and Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley, countless junior high and high schools in Northern Colorado, at various churches and recreation centers, and even outdoor venues.
NCCB has been a 501(c)(3) non-profit since 2013.
Our History
In the summer of 1980, four people determined that there were probably enough musicians in the Greeley-Fort Collins area to form a concert band. So, Jack Meakins, Duane Anderson, Chuck Smith, and Jim Fuller prepared a postcard invitation to all musicians that could be identified. The invite told those interested to come to the Ault High School band room on September 29th for the first rehearsal. 29 people came. Soon, there were 49 musicians under the direction of the late Wayman Walker, and we gave our first concert on November 17th, 1980 at Highland High School in Ault.
Wayman was succeeded by Curtis Johnson, and then by Jay Hatfield who served as conductor until 1991. Jay was followed by UNC doctoral student Gary Schallert (now at Western Kentucky University), and then by Scott Schlup, band director at Lesher JHS, who served until 2000. Scott was followed by Dr. Ron Holleman (conductor of the Ethos Chamber Orchestra) who served until 2005. UNC doctoral student Ronda Street (now Dr. DePriest of Waynedburg University, PA) next served for a year. Our next leader was doctoral student Brian Casey (now Dr. Casey of Houghton College). In the fall of 2007, Bert Aguirre (language arts teacher at South Valley Middle School) became our conductor, and he served for nearly ten years. Starting in Fall 2016, Sebastian Adams (music director at St. Vrain Valley Schools) took the reins.
Over the years, our number has grown from the original four to more than 60 musicians, ranging from ages 15 to 90. Why have we endured for over 40 years? Because we truly enjoy the creative process and coming together to make music!
